Affini and Meeus race into the Top 20 at DDWV
Today’s Dwars door West Vlaanderen marked our first race of the 2018 season. Wind and rain joined the riders since the first kilometers of the day, making the 190 km cobbled parcour between Nieuwpoort and Ichtegem even harder.

After a fast start, it was a trio of riders the one who made it up the road with the peloton allowing them up to eight minutes before starting to increase the pace and quickly reducing the time gap. As expected the Kemmelberg was crucial in the outcome of the race, and broke down the peloton into a smaller group. The crosswind and the cobbled sections that followed the climb made slowly reduced the members of the main group, but the good positioning of our riders kept our colors well represented in the bunch.

Once the 3-man breakaway was caught some counter attacks took place with Cees Bol making the cut and joining nine more riders more riders in the head of the race. The strong Dutchman missed the eventual winning move by just a few meters. Behind, the strong accelerations and the weather conditions slowly reduced the number of riders in the main group leaving Edo Affini and Jordi Meeus stuck with the peloton all the way to the line.  Both riders suffered a bike change and a flat tyre inside the final local lap, but joined the group again and sprinted to 19th and 20th respectively.

Jordi Meeus, 20th today, feels satisfied about the team performance today:

I did not know what to expect coming into the first race of the season, but all in all I felt really good. There was some power in the legs and I could recuperate well after a hard section, which it is something that I have worked on. The hardest part of the race was after the Kemmelberg, with all the cobble sections, the crosswinds and the rain it was easy to lose contact with the group. Overall I am really happy with the result and how we rode and personally with how I felt in during the race, I look forward to race again”.
