Affini spends the day in the break and Bol sprints to sixth
Today’s 160 km long stage between the French towns of Châteaubriant – Louisfert marked the opening day of the 2018 edition of the Tour de Bretagne. After several attempts to jump off the bunch in the first kilometers of the day, it was a group of three riders the one that successfully moved away of the main group, with our Edo Affini in it. The group that featured our strong Italian rider got a maximum gap close to two minutes, with our 21-year old taking one bonus second in the first two intermediate sprints.

The main group kept a constant pace at all times, with our remaining five riders always well positioned and attentive to every move. The gap was down to 30 seconds for the three leaders when the peloton entered into the final local circuit, but the good cooperation and the high speed kept the peloton away. With 15 km to go Edoardo Affini launched a strong attack and went solo to lead the race. The strong legs of the Italian rider kept the main group chasing for 10 km before being caught just before entering into the last local after a whole day in the front, taking three more bonus seconds in the last intermediate sprint of the day.

After Affini was brought back, some counter attacks took place at the head of the bunch but the stage victory was eventually decided in a mass sprint. Cees Bol took the most of the work of his teammates and sprinted to sixth in the day. Thanks to the five bonus seconds picked up in the breakaway Edoardo Affini moves up to sixth overall with Bol ninth. Our Italian rider will sweep our colors for red tomorrow as he is currently in the lead of the young riders classification.

Edoardo Affini, Best Young Rider:
“I am really happy with how the day turned out, it was exactly as we planned during the team meeting. After being in the break all day I tried to go solo in the last 15 km, I knew that it was really hard to make it all the way but I could not stay without giving it a go, and I could hold the bunch until only one lap was left. Later Cees could sprint with the bests, and that puts us in a really great position after the first day. However, the plan will remain the same, race day by day at our best possible level and then see what the race holds for us”.
