After a very strong 3-man prologue yesterday, in which the one formed by Daan Hoole, Wessel Krul and Stan van Tricht fell less than one second short of the win, it was the turn of the first road stage. Such a performance in yesterday’s opener, allowed Stan van Tricht to start the day in the Best Young Rider.
Our goal today was to be part of the breakaway, but despite the effort, it was a group of five riders that was allowed up the road, getting a maximum gap of seven minutes. When the difference reached that point, the peloton picked up the pace and started to bring the breakaway back. The bunch was quite speedy as with a bit more than 30 km to go the race was back in one piece. After that several attacks followed, but eventually the big group went together into the final part of the race.
Our riders tried to position Stan van Tricht for a great finale, but in the end, things did not turn out the best. Tomorrow we have another chance to keep on fighting.
Pim Ligthart, Academy DS:
“We tried to go for the bonus seconds on the breakaway but we could not manage to do that. We saved forces to go all in the final, but when we were working on the lead out we lost ourselves a little bit and we could not do the job that we wanted. However, that’s just a small setback, because we are determined to go out again tomorrow and show our fighting spirit”
