Who?
Jordi Meeus, the lion of Lommel.
What about him?
Jordi Meeus joined the Academy program as a trainee towards the end of the 2017 season as a first-year U23 as a talented and promising rider. Three and half years later he developed into one of the most dominant sprinters of the U23 ranks and a very strong one-day racer.
How did he perform?
Already in his first full season at the Academy, Meeus snatched a win at 1.1’s Gooikse Pijl which already brought his name to the table of the teams at the top level of the sport. In 2019 he kept up his progression and scored another win while serving as trusted lead-out man of Kaden Groves and Alberto Dainese who both combined for 10+ wins. This season Meeus battled hard in the U23 Road Series in which he came in second after being in contention to get the overall win until the last race. However, 2020 proved to be his more successful year and the young Belgian sprinter took home a total of five wins, including two stage wins in the Czech Tour, a stage win at the Giro d’Italia U23 and the U23 Belgian Road Race title.
What was next after the Academy?
The dominance that Meeus showed in his last year as U23, caught the eye of several WorldTour teams. Despite having several options, Bora-Hansgrohe was the one that offered the best development plan for Jordi and he signed a two-year deal with them. Already in the first year, Jordi showed that he was advancing through the phases of the plan and scored his first win at the Tour de Hongrie.
