Antunes: “Morale is high and confidence is renewed”

Tour d’Alsace marked the first race of Tiago Antunes in Academy colors as he joined the team as a trainee. Even though he started the year as part of the World Cycling Center roster, he moved back to Aldro Team just before the Ronde l’Isard, in which he climbed to third in the opening stage. “2018 was a tough one for me, I was constantly changing teams and adapting to new environments and conditions. One thing it is certain and is that I learnt a lot by having to overcome difficulties that make me stronger. In the physical side, things were not as good as I hoped and it clearly affected my performance, but I look forward to the coming challenges”.

For the past two and a half years with Aldro Team, Antunes has proven himself as one of the strongest climbers, not only of the Spanish scene but also at international level, with Top 10 in Course de la Paix, Ronde de l’Isard, second overall in Volta a Portugal U23 and two Avenir selctions under his belt. However, the Portuguese rider expects to keep on developing his skillset while in the Academy structure. “Joining the team in the middle of the season it was a decision thinking already in 2019, and I can say that it worked. I have found new ways of working and I already met new people who will hlep me to overcome the day-to-day challenges of being a cyclist” highlights Antunes.

Even thoguth that the 2019 season still at a young stage, Antunes, who will be in Loutraki for most of the winter, has already a clear image of what he wants to fight for in the next sesason. “Morale is high and confidence is renewed, so I am looking forward to have a proper preparation as we have all the facilities to do so. If everthing goes well and I am in shape I want to aim for hard stage races like Ronde de l’Isard, the Giro d’Italia U23, Tour d’Alsace … where I can show my potential”.
