Cees Bol will move to the WorldTour with Team Sunweb
Cees Bol will move up to the professional ranks with WorldTour’s Team Sunweb. After a really solid 2018, where he seized wins in races like Tour de Bretagne, Flèche Ardennaise or Wanzeel Koerse, Bol will join the Dutch squad as a trainee before starting a two-year deal with the team. “I am really happy to join such a great team. It has always been a dream to become a professional and now I can say that I achieved it. However, I will not stop here as I want to keep on developing myself as a rider and I think that Team Sunweb is the best environment to do so” highlights Bol.

The Dutch rider will start his journey with Team Sunweb already in August the first in Post Denmark Tour, but will still race in the Academy colors in the closing part of the season. “In the coming years I want to develop myself in sprints and classics and Sunweb will offer me the chance to gain experience in those races alongside some of the best riders in the world. I will have to adjust to the higher level and the different racing style, but I am confident that with patience I can do it without problems” explains Bol, who holds more 1o podiums under his belt in 2018.

The strong Dutchman was recruited by the Academy ahead of the 2017 season, but he had to sit out for most of that season because of a long-lasting injury caused by a head concussion. From the first steps of his recovery, Bol was given a guaranteed spot in the Academy for 2018 and he did not miss the chance to show himself. “The Academy has been really important for my personal and professional development. I am very grateful as they always kept me fully motivated during my recovery process and made sure that I could stay and race an amazing program even though I was not U23 anymore”.  The 22-year Dutchman points out the professionalism and the development program of the Academy as one of the key points in order to make the next step. “From the sporting side, I can say that the Academy properly guided me before moving up to the professional level and the calendar I could race this year was simply amazing and had a huge impact on my development as a rider. All in all, I am very thankful for everything the Academy has done for me”.

Bart van Haaren, Academy Manager:
“It is really special to see Cees moving up to the WorldTour after all the setbacks he had in 2017. From the very beginning, we knew that we were dealing with a super talent and we gave him the right environment, the proper training schedule and the racing program that best suited his skills in order to show the world what he was capable of”.

Eelco Berkhout, SEG Cycling Director and UCI Licensed Rider Agent:
“With the season that Cees had it was clear that there would be a lot of interest for him in the market. Team Sunweb had been following his progression for a while and they offered him the perfect environment and racing opportunities to show his talent from early on. We know that they have the knowledge and the right philosophy to work with talented riders like him, so it was a perfect fit for both sides”.
