Today’s stage in Tour de Normandie presented a predominantly flat 170 km long parcour, with a final local circuit that was set to see the race finish in a bunch sprint. It was yet again a fast start with a group of four riders going up the road and forming the breakaway of the day.
Back in the bunch, our riders had a clear goal, deliver Alberto Dainese into the best possible position coming into the final. His second place in yesterday’s opening day confirmed the good sensations and that’s why Tiago Antunes joined the team of the leader early on in order to control the break, with Daan Hoole helping him later on. The last member of the breakaway was brought back with just three kilometers to the line. Nerviosism was again present in the final and some riders went down in the final part, but that did not stop Marten Kooistra and Jordi Meeus to keep Dainese close to the front and leading him out perfectly in the final meters. The Italian sprinter was unstoppable and took an uncontested win outpowering everyone else in the sprint.
Thanks to today’s results Dainese moves to the top of the general classification and will start tomorrow in the yellow jersey. The Italian 21-year old also leads the points classification as well as the Best Young Rider one.
Vasilis Anastopoulos, Performance Manager and DS for the race:
“Our plan was to go for the bunch sprint, and that is what we worked for from the first kilometer of the stage. When four riders went away, firstly Tiago (Antunes) and then Daan (Hoole) helped in the chase. In the final part, Jordi (Meeus) and Maarten (Kooistra) kept Alberto (Dainese) safe at all times, and he just delivered perfectly. It was our plan and it worked as we wanted, mission accomplished!”.
