Edoardo Affini will join Mitchelton – Scott
Edoardo Affini will become the fourth Academy graduate of 2018 as he will move up to the WorldTour with Team Mitchelton-Scott. This way the 22-year old Italian will complete his dream of moving up to the pro ranks after joining the Academy ahead of the 2017 season. “It is truly a dream come true to move to WorldTour and doing so with such a team like Mitchelton-Scott makes it even more special”, points out Affini.

Affini, who in 2018 has seized a total of five victories including both U23 Italian national titles as well as the U23 European time trial win, expects to keep on developing as a bike rider, but with special emphasis to his specialty, time trials. “I am really excited to see that they offering a really nice project for young riders, and the good work they do with them. They have a strong focus on time trials and that it is something that I can really enjoy. I want to learn as much as possible from everyone in the team and help them as much as possible”.

The current U23 Italian national champion joined the Academy in 2017, after being already in talks with the management of the Academy for a while. In two years, he has enjoyed a personalized training and racing program that features some of the races that best suited his skills. Also during this period, Affini has been a regular to our testing facilities and alongside the Academy scientists, they have worked together on improving his time trial position. The four wins against the clock in 2018 prove that all the hard work paid off. “All I can say is that joining SEG Racing Academy was the best decision I could take. I realize now that I went into a really special environment that really cares about the development of not only riders but also persons. Everyone has been really nice to me when things have gone well, but most importantly everyone involved with the Academy has taken good care of me in the bad times. I am very thankful to everyone in the Academy for all the work that we have done together”.

Bart van Haaren, Academy Manager:
“We are delighted to see our fourth rider moving up to the WorldTour. Edoardo joined the Academy ahead of the 2017 season, and already then he showed what he was capable of. Our Performance Staff has worked a lot with Edo in order to improve his skill set, and his 2018 performances were just a confirmation what we already knew, that he belonged to the WorldTour.

Martijn Berkhout, SEG Cycling Director & UCI Registered Agent:
“Edoardo had an amazing season and confirmed his condition of word class talent, so it was clear that he would have several options in the market and Mitchelton-Scott offered the best development program for him and his time trial ability. It is well-know the good work they do with young talents and how do they take care of their development, so it was easy to identify it as the best possible environment for him to keep growing”.
