After the success at Coppa de la Pace, it was time for our talented lineup to start one of our biggest goals of the year, the Giro d’Italia U23. The Corsa Rosa started in Cesenatico and when all the way up to Riccione, with two categorized, climbs in between.

The stage was off to a calm start and quickly a group of 6 riders went up the road while all Academy jerseys kept riding safely in the bunch. The peloton took it easy and after 60 km the gap was up to 9 minutes. At that mark, it was when the pace was picked by the main group with the aim of reducing the gap and getting it done in the final bunch sprint.

However, the peloton fell short to bring the breakaway back, and the six riders ended up ahead. Stan van Tricht sprinted to third of the bunch which accounted for ninth in the day, 37 seconds after the stage winner.

Tomorrow’s stage will feature a total of 138 km on the way to Imola, where a nervous and hilly finale previews great action.

Pim Ligthart, weights on stage 1:
“It was a pity that the break stayed away as we had a good chance with Stan (van Tricht) as he proved in the sprint of the bunch. However, we are also the long game in this Giro d’Italia U23 so have to look at the fact that we went through the first day without trouble very positively”.
