After coming close to the win yesterday with a second-place by Jordi Meeus in the bunch sprint, our talents were committed to give it another shot today, as the long parcour around Lake Commo presented a flat profile which suited the skills of our fast riders. The stage started fast as usual and some attackers tried their luck up the road, with eventually a 4-man break going clear.
The bunch had the breakaway under control at all times, allowing them close to four minutes. Our riders had a clear mission, and like yesterday the goal set in the pre-race meeting was to get the race to a bunch sprint finish. Riders of the likes of Harrison Wood, Daan Hoole and David Dekker made sure to stay near the front of the race and controlling the chase. The main group caught the remaining leading trio with 4 kilometers to go as the sprints trains started to form.
Coming to the end, our Jordi Meeus was put in prime position by the team and could have a clean sprint and seize the stage win. This one accounts as his fourth win of the season, and his third UCI win in less than a month. Tomorrow the bunch will have a short but really hilly stage on the menu, ending atop of a Hors Categorie climb.
Jordi Meeus, Giro d’Italia U23 Stage winner:
“We were close yesterday, but we know that this could be our chance today so we worked hard for it. It was a very fast day, but we just stayed calm and out of trouble in the bunch. Harrison did an amazing job in the front, and David and Daan kept me away from the wind until the last 2-3 km and then Daan did an amazing leadout and I’m super happy to have been able to finish the job. After two second places, we kept believing that the win was coming, so that’s a reward for all of us”
