Hard and freezing day in Houtse Linies
After yesterday’s Ronde van Groningen, Houtse Linies featured our second race of another action packed weekend for the team. The day started badly as Ide Schelling and Marten Kooistra did not start due to illness and the team lineup was down to only four riders. Because of the extreme weather conditions (maximum temperatures of 1ºC) the race was cut down one lap of the initial eleven.

The tough conditions shaped the race early on and quickly the bunch split into many groups. Unluckily the race had to be neutralized because of  a crash that involved our Daan Hoole, who was forced to withdraw from the race but without any major injuries. As the race when on, a 12-man group made it to the front leaving behind 8 riders who tried to jumped across. Our Edo Affini made the effort to reduce the time gap and catch the leading bunch, but he paid the effort and was eventually dropped. It was not a good day for us, as none of our four starters could make it to the finish.

Bart van Haaren, Academy Manager and DS for the race, sums up the day:
“It was definitively a very hard race for our youngsters. After yesterday’s strong effort, Marten and Ide felt sick so it was not smart to line them up. With such weather conditions it was very difficult to ride, but I am sure that it will be a day that they will remember for a while. Even though that we did not perform as we expected, today’s experience will be something that these young rider will build on”.
