It was a hard day on the bike for our 5-man squad in Belgium’s GP Stad Zottegem. The race was off to a fast start with many attackers trying to go on the break of the day, and our riders kept the Academy’s flag well represented. First it was Ide Schelling who followed some early moves trying to make the good cut, and afterwards it was Jordi Meeus’ turn. Bad luck was on the side of our trainee as was chasing the eventual breakaway of the day when he crashed without consequences, after getting up he stayed in the bunch.
After the three man move was gone, our guys stayed in the bunch and the gap was close to six minutes before the main pack started to bring the leaders back. Once the peloton was going through one of the main difficulties of the day, the Paddenstraat, three of our riders got caught up in a crash. Cees Bol, Stevie Williams and Henrik Evensen were forced to call it quits after 130 km, but without any major injuries.
Our best man at the finish line was our trainee Jordi Meeus, who crossed the line one minute after the eventual winner of the day. But today was a special day as Cees Bol sealed his comeback and raced for the first time in 2017 after his early-season injury. It’s only the start, Cees!
