As expected, today was a hard day out in Belgium. Four categorized climbs were tackled before the riders got to the final circuit with the cobbled climb of the Châteux d’Aitoing was awaiting twice. After a hectic start the peloton did not give much room to the breakaways that were trying to go clear. A massive crash in the first part of the stage, led to the race being neutralized by the organization. Three of our riders were involved in that accident, but all of them resumed the race without any notable injuries.
It wasn’t until the second time that the riders went up the Châteux d’Aitoing that a small group of around 19 riders, including Hartthijs de Vries, broke clear and finished 13 seconds before the peloton. Thanks to today's 13th place in the stage Hartthijs moved up in GC and is currently sitting 16th, 18 seconds behind the race leader ahead of tomorrow’s double stage.
Today’s Volta a Limburg Classic featured up to thirty short steep climbs that together with the rain and wind, made the course extremely hard. It took long until the breakaway was set up, but with 70 km to go the winning move was made in the form of a big breakaway group but our guys missed it. The final victory decided in a final three men sprint.
Tomorrow we will be back tomorrow with Triptyque's double stage!
