Ide Schelling: “Our goal will be to win LBL”
Second year U23, Ide Schelling, has been off to a strong start of the season. He dominated the Loutraki Challenge by winning the uphill time trial and placing second in the road race, both strong performances saw him emerging as the first ever overall winner of the event. The 20-year old Dutchman carried his condition and place second in Ronde van Zuid-Holland behind teammate Marten Kooistra and last week fought with the best in Circuit des Ardennes and seized a 13th place overall. Next up for the talented youngster is Liège-Bastogne-Liège, one of the most prestigious one-day races of the calender that he will tackle for the second time.

“I am really confident going into Saturday’s race. Liège-Bastogne-Liège has been always a race that I have liked a lot and now I will get the chance to show myself on the road”, points out Schelling who showed his powerful climb skills last year by taking the KOM classification in the Nation Cup’s Course de la Paix. “My condition is on point, and I already had a glimpse of it in Circuit des Ardennes. It was a really hard 3 days of racing, but that made me even stronger”.

When it comes to the in-race strategy Schelling hopes that the experience acquired in last year’s events helps him for a better performance. “I am expecting a hard race, just as it was last year. There I was in the early break, but this time I think that I can have a go in the final part of the race”. Ide will be one of the six Academy riders that will start in Belgium coming Saturday, in such a hard race the young Dutchman knows the importance of relying in a the team. “We will start with a really strong team, so I think that we can have a numerical advantage at the end. The goal for us will be to win the race, and if not try to be as close as possible, and that it is something that can be accomplished by all 6 riders”.
