Ide Schelling takes fourth in Alsace
After yesterday’s opening three-man team time trial, where our trio formed by Jordi Meeus, Marten Kooistra and Stevie Williams powered to third, it was the turn of the first road stage of the race. A total of 145 km awaited the riders, starting with a long descent followed by a really flat parcour all the way to the line. In the first moments of the stage many breakaway attempts took place, and eventually, it was a group of 11 riders who went up the road. Our second year U23, Ide Schelling, represented the Academy flag up front.

After a really fast first hour of racing, the peloton allowed the front group more than 5 minutes. The good cooperation between the break members kept the gap really stable and did not allow the main group to come back in time. The stage glory was decided between the 11 riders with our youngster sprinting to fourth in the day ahead of tomorrow’s mountaintop finish up the Planche des Belles Filles.

The hard and nervous chase caused some crashes back in the peloton and unfortunately, our Stephen Williams was caught in one of them. The Welshman could finish the stage without injuries, and despite the time loss he will keep on fighting. Tomorrow’s stage will test the abilities of the climbers in the race, as apart from the final climb the peloton will go through four other categorized climbs throughout the 145 km that they will ride.
