Yesterday our Jordi Meeus, became the U23 Belgian Road Race Champion, after outpowering all his rivals in the final sprint. The 22-year old, who will move up to the WorldTour ranks next season with Bora-Hansgrohe, was helped by teammate Stan van Tricht during the whole day. “It feels great to win the jersey. I’m super happy to win the race and thank the team for the past years!” highlights Meeus after his last race in Academy colors.
Our lineup for the day was down to two riders, due to the injuries suffered by Milan Paulus in Paris Tours U23, but Stan van Tricht and Jordi Meeus played it perfectly and dominated all the scenarios that came by during the day. “The plan was to stay a bit ‘low profile’ the first part of the race without missing something important. There was a breakaway of 4 with Lotto Soudal and Soenens in it. But we noticed that only Soenens was satisfied with that situation. So for us, it was just a waiting game. Be patient and save as much energy as possible. In the end, Stan was countering attacks and closing the gap. Without him, I think I would not have won the race. So I’m super proud and grateful to Stan! We had a plan, kept calm, and we executed perfectly”.
As mentioned above, yesterday’s race featured the end of Meeus’ stint at the Academy, after joining our program halfway into the 2017 season. “I think that ‘giving’ the national jersey to the team is a super important thing for them, so this is a great way to end my time with the Academy. This is a perfect ending of my SEG Racing Academy chapter but also winning in Paris Tours would have been the cherry on top of the pie like they say in Belgium. Anyway, it’s super to win a national title as well for me as for the team!”
