Julius van den Berg will join Team EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale in a mid-season transfer
Julius van den Berg will be joining Team EF Education First p/b Cannondale as of July the 1st in a mid-season transfer that will see our Dutch all-rounder move up to the pro ranks after a dominating season in the U23 category. “It feels surreal. It is like it is not happening and also that it is happening very fast. But I am over the moon and it is crazy that this dream is coming true after an amazing three and a half seasons with the Academy” highlights van den Berg.

The now 21-year old landed in the first ever Academy roster back in 2015 when the team was founded. Van den Berg came straight from the Junior ranks and after four seasons in our development program, he has achieved his dream of moving up to the WorldTour. “I remember the first ever conversation I had with the management of the team, how they had a clear vision of what they wanted for me individually and for the Academy as a whole. At the time it seemed crazy, but piece by piece and step by step the puzzle is now completed. I am leaving behind so many fun memories with amazing teammates and professionals by my side. Now it is time to get to work and learn from experienced pro riders and classics specialists like Sep Vanmarcke and Sebastian Langeveld. Riding and being with them will help me a lot in my future dream in contention for the win in races like Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix” points out the Dutchman who will be with the North American team until the end of 2020.

Van den Berg will turn himself into the twelfth Academy rider who gets a chance with a professional team since the inception of our Academy project. The Dutch rider had an amazing start of the season, holding a total of five wins under his belt as well as a second place in a nail-biting finish in Paris Roubaix after an amazing performance on the cobbles, after having already an impressive 2017 as the trusted lead-out man of Quick Step’s Fabio Jakobsen and as U23 Dutch National time trial champion. Van den Berg knows the importance that the Academy and everyone involved in the project has had on his development as a bike rider. “SEG Racing Academy is my whole development. I came in in 2015 as a Junior with no knowledge about anything and the Academy helped me with the everything, from training to relax. I consider myself a really lucky guy to have been in the team for almost four years. I would never have been this good without the professional infrastructure that the SEG Racing Academy offers”.

Bart van Haaren, Academy Manager:
“Julius is the clear reflection of the progress and growth of our Academy ever since the beginning. He came in as a first-year, and after completing the whole category cycle with the Academy he has turned into the most dominant rider of the U23 ranks, and that is what the Academy stands for. The fact that a rider like Julius moves up to the pro ranks is a big compliment to the work of our performance staff who properly guided him as well as to all our partners who make this project possible”.
