Born December 2, 1993 in Ulft, he arrived at the Academy as a fourth year U23 rider without specialty
What about him?
Koen is a fantastic character; positive, happy and loyal; the perfect teammate. His ticket to pro level was a result of his consistency. We knew he could climb!
How did he perform?
He developed as we like it the most: progressively. First in the shadow of Alex Peters, but then he came out at the moment we expected, delivering very solid performances from Tour de Normandie until Tour de Alsace. The absolute highlight of his development: winning the queen stage of the Giro Valle d’Aosta on the Colle del Gran San Bernardo. After that win, things went fast.
What was next for him after the Academy?
Together with Koen, we turned down some offers for him to become professional at Pro Continental level and took the chance for a traineeship at Team Lotto-Jumbo. It didn’t take long to convince the team’s staff – after Tour of Britain he signed for two years. In June 2017 during the famous Criterium du Dáuphine, Koen wrote Academy history as he became the first ever Alumni to take a stage win in the professional ranks. Not happy with that he also brought home the KOM jersey. Four years after he left the Academy he keeps on proving his consistency, improvement, and loyalty and in 2019 he wrapped up his fourth complete season with the Dutch WorldTour squad, and has a inked a deal until the end of 2021.
