It was a hard race around the Col de VAM in the Drenthe area. The race featured up to 17 laps around the a hilly circuit with some steep sections, that were set to be the race decider. The race was off to a slow start as no breakaway attempt was made in the early stages of the race. It wasn’t until a group of three riders, without Academy representation, made it up the road that the bunch did not pick up the pace.

The 3-man group was allowed up to 2 minutes, but our riders were always really close to the front of the pack, keeping an eye on how the action was unfolding. Sadly, close to the mid-part of the race, David Dekker and Daan Hoole were involved in a crash, which forced them to chase back to the bunch. After two laps and following the consequences of the crash, Daan Hoole, decided to abandon the race.

The gap to the breakaway went down to around a minute, but it remain stable there more even when another trio of riders jumped across. Back at the front of the bunch, our riders put on a joint effort to try to bring the move back, but it was not possible and the victory was decided among the six leaders. Back in the sprint of the bunch, our Maikel Zijlaard, who was really active all day long, crossed the line in eighth place.

Aike Visbeek, SEG Racing Academy Director and DS for the race:
“It was not the result that we came after, so we can’t be entirely happy with the final result. We wanted to control the race, but we were always on the wrong foot, and when David (Dekker) and Daan (Hoole) crashed, it even made the situation more complicated. However, the guys gave it all until the line, and Maikel (Zijlaard) could represent the team with solid result”.

Maikel Zijlaard, 8th place on the day:
“It was not the best day for us, as lacked a bit of luck with the crashes of David and Daan. Personally, I felt good and I am very happy with my result, so that gives me a lot of confidence for the upcoming races”.
