Name Maarten van Kooij
Date of birth 06-11-1980
Country Netherlands
Place of residence Maastricht
Education Bachelor Health Sciences, Master Human Movement Sciences.

What is your role within SEG Racing Academy?
Within SEG Racing Academy I am part of the performance staff. The performance staff optimizes the conditions in which the riders can perform. We make individual training schedules, we test the riders, we guide them in nutrition and we make pacing plans for the time trials.

What is your background in cycling?
I started racing when I was 15 years old and had a license for almost 25 years. As a junior, I raced some World Cups and later, as an Elite Amateur, I raced across Europe and other parts of the world. I never was a rider who could impress, but I enjoyed the training and the atmosphere of the race. When I became older I started to race in triathlon and I am still active as a long course triathlete. With these experiences, I am aware of all the dynamics of a cycling race and the life one should live to be able to perform well.

What are your academy goals for 2021?
My goals for 2021 are clear: make the riders better and guide them in the best way so they have the opportunity to take the next step: become a professional rider. To do that, I try to stay up to date with scientific knowledge about training and performance, have regular meetings with the staff, and be available for the riders for support.
