Today’s race in Achterhoek was a hard one with several parts of gravel racing being key when it came to deciding the day’s winner. It was all off to a fast start with two riders breaking clear of the bunch and forming the breakaway of the day. All our guys stayed in the main group saving their legs and energy for the final part of the race.
Once the race was to the second half of the parcours, the race blew up with the main group breaking into pieces. Inside the last 30 km of the day a group of 14 riders, featuring our Maikel Zijlaard and Corbin Strong went up the road, opening a solid gap to the chasers. Coming around the two final laps, it was clear that the eventual winner of the day would be played among the members of that group. Just before the final lap started, a group of five went away from the lead and sprinted for the win. Our Maikel Zijlaard crossed the line in ninth place and Corbin Strong in 14th.
Dries Hollanders, Academy DS for the race:
“It was a very solid effort from the team. In the end, we were in the right place at the right time, and it was down to the inner-working of the group and the riders to make one decision or another. After many 1.1 races over these past days, it was great to see how we are improving and that we are in the mix for the win”.
Corbin Strong, clinched a Top 15 finish:
“It was a good day, obviously we wanted to win but we were in the mix to do it. We have to learn from this one and move onto the next goal. I felt really well-supported by the guys and it was good to see that at the end we have each other’s back with Maikel”.
