The 2021 season, could not have started in a better way for the Academy and especially for our New Zealand talent, Corbin Strong, who yesterday claimed the overall title at the New Zealand Cycle Classic. After finishing third there last year, Strong was determined to go back and seal the win, and a very smart ride in the closing stage, allowed him to collect the needed bonus seconds to jump atop of the general classification.
“It’s a special victory. Winning in my country’s only UCI stage race is something that has always been on my bucket list. Losing the yellow jersey at Tour of Southland’s (New Zealand’s other big stage race) last stage in November really lit a fire inside me and I was extremely motivated to prove myself that I could pull off a GC win like this” points out Strong.
This motivation and hard-working ethic were what throve the World Track Points Champion, to find that extra power to become the man to beat. “We are in the middle of the summer in New Zealand, so the preparations have been really nice and easy-going. I trained well over that period and I knew that I was in good shape coming into the race. It really suited me as it had a mix of sprint stages and some short and punchy climbs. It was great to work together with Ioannis (Tamouridis) and the preps leading to the race were just on point”.
Corbin Strong will stay in New Zealand as he will be competing in the upcoming Gravel and Tar Classic on the 23rd of January.
