Two Academy Alumni riding La Vuelta
SEG Racing Academy Alumni Koen Bouwman and Nick Schultz were yesterday in Nîmes for the start of the 2017 Vuelta España. The Dutch climber, who graduated from the Academy in 2015, will be starting his second Grand Tour of his career after successfully completing last year’s Vuelta a España. In this past season we have seen the 23-year old take his first ever win in the pro ranks as he won the third stage at the prestigious Criterium du Dauphiné, alongside coming home with the Best Climber’s jersey.

“In my opinion every grand tour is a special thing. Be together for almost a month with a group of nearly 30 people in totall is allready something special. But all the spectators along the rode and fans before the start is the most beautiful thing, you don’t have these amount off people in ‘normal’ races.”

Graduated in 2016 from the Academy and first timer in a Grand Tour, Nick Schultz, will be part of the 9-man roster of Spain’s Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. The young Australian Neo Pro arrives to La Vuelta after seizing good results throughout the year. The 22-year old holds under his belt a seventh place overall at the Tour of Norway and two close calls at stage wins in the Tour of the Alps and in the Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour

Schultz feels calms and relaxed ahead of his first ever three-week long race:

“Being at the start of my first Grand Tour, in my first year as a professional is a big surprise and very humbling. Having arrived in Nîmes, I’m trying to stay relaxed but I can also feel the hype around one of the biggest races in the worlds. It’s quite daunting lining up on the start line along side guys that I have idolized throughout my career. In the back of my mind, I would love to make it to Madrid and I will take a day by day approach in trying to achieve that goal.”

We are proud to see these two alumni making big steps in their career. Good luck en Enjoy the next three weeks Koen & Nick!
