We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Aike Visbeek as Academy Director of SEG Racing Academy. Aike Visbeek, is one of the most promising Sport Directors in international cycling, with the 2017 Giro d’Italia overall win being his absolute highlight while serving as DS for Team Sunweb.
After a period of 7 years with the WorldTour squad, Visbeek makes now the transition from Sport Director to Managing Director of one of the best U23 development teams in the world. Visbeek, will oversee and manage all the Academy activities at the same time as he combines it with coaching duties.
This also means the departure of Bart van Haaren as current Academy Manager. After a period of five years managing the team to what it is right now, Bart van Haaren, decided to take up a new challenge and role within SEG Cycling and focus more on professional cycling rather than U23 development. Van Haaren had a massive contribution in the early creation of the team as well as in it’s preparation for the future. He will use the coming period to help introduce Aike Visbeek into his new role and to make the full transition to SEG Cycling himself.
SEG Racing Academy Board members, Martijn & Eelco Berkhout:
‘’We are really happy to have been able to appoint our number one candidate for the Academy Director position. As we come from the same region we have always followed Aike’s career in professional cycling with great interest, so when the opportunity came to hire him we didn’t hesitate. He has a lot of experience on rider development, but specially he will bring in new ideas to move the organization forward. We are happy with where we are, but we are aware cycling is changing and therefore we need to continuously challenge ourselfs to make sure the organisation and riders develop in the right way.’’
‘’Against the appointment of Aike we also see Bart van Haaren leave as Academy Manager. Happily for us it’s not a goodbye because Bart will pick up a new challenge within SEG Cycling. Together with Bart we have been able to build SEG Racing Academy to the development institution that now stands for. He can be extremely proud on that and we can’t thank him enough for all his efforts. As part of SEG Cycling he will still be involved with the Academy’s activities and will always function as great source of knowledge for the Academy staff.’’.
Speaking on his appointment, Aike Visbeek said: ‘’Working with talented and ambitious riders in a high-level environment and organisation is what I love to do. Also, getting the responsibility to run SEG Racing Academy is a new challenge in my career which I look very much forward to. After talking to Bart (van Haaren), Eelco and Martijn (Berkhout) I was impressed with how they built the Academy and I share the mission and vision they have on which direction the team has to go in the future. Bart (van Haaren), has done a tremendous job working daily on building the Academy to the team that it’s nowadays, and it feels like we have a chance to build it further. The team has one of the best racing programs out there, the staff is also top notch and the results and riders developed in the past five years speak for themselves “.
Bart van Haaren on looking back and forward:
‘’I’m looking back with great pleasure and pride on the last 5 years. It was an amazing ride to help build the Academy to an institute it now stands for together with everyone involved, such as riders, staff and partners. We showed that with hard work, dedication and the right mindset, we have been able to create an high performance environment, that could see U23 talents develop into professional cyclists. I’m looking forward to keep on guiding the (next generation of) future stars from another role and as part of SEG Cycling I will closely follow the next steps of the Academy as development institute”.
