Weekend recap
It was an action-packed weekend for the Academy as we featured the start line of U23 Road Series GP Arjaan Schipper on Saturday as well as Flèche Ardennaise on Sunday. The weekend got off to a solid start as our riders showed themselves from early on in. Quickly a 7-man group got a significant gap to the peloton, with Daan Hoole and Marten Kooistra representing our flag up front. Several groups tried to counter-attack, but we had it cover with Minne Verboom, Jordi Meeus and Jesper Rasch, who successfully defend their teammate’s interests. The 7-man group got into the closing 10 km with more than three minutes of advantage over the bunch, which allowed them to play for the win. Our Marten Kooistra took third in the reduced sprint with Daan Hoole in sixth. Jordi Meeus and Jesper Rasch dominated the sprint of the chasing group, which accounted for eighth and ninth in the day, making it four Academy riders in the first 10 positions of the race.

Flèche Ardennaise brought in sweet memories from last year, as our Alumni and current Sunweb riders, Cees Bol finished off a day-long breakaway with an impressive win. The race was really hectic from the beginning, and it took more than 30 km to form the breakaway of the day. A 17-man group went up the road, including our Ide Schelling and Thymen Arensman, with the latter attacking and going solo in the lead for a while. With 30 km left, Ide Schelling was part of a 5-man chasing group who tried to bridge to the two leaders but they could not manage to close the gap and got brought back by the bunch, leaving the Academy with no reward after a hard-fought day.
