Maikel Zijlaard, who recently has been competing against some of the biggest names of the sport in 6 Days of Rotterdam, has been enjoying a busy time on the track during the winter period as he gets ready for his first season with the Academy. During that time the talented Dutchman was crowned as national Individual Pursuit Champion, which followed the National Team Pursuit title achieved a few weeks before.
“I think that combining track racing and road training in this time of the winter is really beneficial. It makes the time fly by at the same time as your fitness improves. It’s not about doing something different, it’s about doing something that I really like in a serious way. I want to be a good track rider, and I know that by doing this I will improve my road racing strengths” points out the 20-year old.
The short strong efforts done in the Individual Pursuit discipline combined with the variety of events ridden in the 6 Days, allow our talented rider to improve in a wide range of skills. “The different kind of training and racing is making me gain speed in the legs at a very high pace and pushing my boundaries, which will be largely beneficial when the road season kicks off” highlights Zijlaard.
